Tim Berners-Lee publishes the first ever website

Tim Berners-Lee, working at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, CERN, published the first ever website on August 6, 1991.

The URL was http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html, and is still available to view today.

The site introduces the World Wide Web project, describes how to create Web pages, and provides information about hypertext.

It was hosted on Tim's NeXT computer at CERN. To prevent it being turned off, the computer had a hand-written label in red ink: "This machine is a server. DO NOT POWER IT DOWN!!"
